| The earliest examples of the armenian religious paintings are known to us from the first half of XVII century. These works, based on Evangelical themes and the history of the armenian apostolic church, were mainly painted by oil paints on canvas and have been created for armenian churches both in Armenia and abroad-for diaspora.
The main peculiarities of these works are the free interpretation of the traditional religions themes, the creation of national types, the bright and rich colors, the naive way of thinking and the presence of decorative elements. In most cases the names of the artists who created these works, often self-taught and proffesional are unknown to us. That’s why these paintings are grouped under the tile of “Unknown armenian artists of XVII-XIX centuries”.
