THE EXHIBITION OF G. YAKOULOV’S ARTWORKS AT THE STATE TRETYAKOV GALLERY

The following exhibition dedicated to G.Yakoulov’s 130th anniversary is a significant event for all art loving people as well as a real revelation for the new generation. This is the first international exhibition of his artworks after the one held in the State Museum of Oriental Art of Moscow in 1975. It is а landmark event and allows evaluating the painter’s artistic heritage in a new way. The organizers have pledged themselves to represent Yakoulov’s art among those avant-garde artists the Tretyakov gallery is renowned for. Noteworthy are the exhibitions dedicated to A. Lentulov, M. Larionov, N. Goncharova, V. Tatlin and P. Konchalovski. Being organically drawn into the pleiad of these masters Yakoulov could solve the art problems of the time with his contemporaries (he had both creative and close relations with many of them).
The exhibition includes more than 120 works from A. Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum, which holds the major collection of the artist (about 500 works) as well as fifty-three paintings and drawings from the National Gallery of Armenia. The State Tretyakov Gallery, The State Literature Museum, The State Bolshoy Theatre Museum and private collectors took part in the exhibition.
This exhibition is the result of the hard work of the NGA’s researchers. They have been compiling data about the artist, studying his creative heritage and specifying the dates of his activity for over three years. A number of books and catalogues have been published. The curators and art historians of the State Tretyakov gallery have made a great contribution to the organization of the exhibition. The catalogue of more than 300 pages includes studies about G. Yakoulov and is full of illustrations. I. Vakar, T. Mikheenko, I. Bagdamyan, A. Krusanov, A. Harutiunyan and L. Betredinova are among its authors. They consider Yakoulov’s art within the scope of the time along with avant-garde movement thus observing his relations with French artists Robert and Sonia Delaunay, revealing his role in the theatre and representing his architectural projects.
The design of the exhibition is worth special attention. The painter’s various artistic interests have been revealed through it. The design has been made by the head of the Exhibition Department of the State Tretyakov gallery N. Divova and artist-designer A. Podkidisheva.
Thanks to the small but precisely chosen material and the professional organization of the exposition area they could manage to get a complete impression of it making the viewers percept each exhibited item. They could highlight the most important: Yakoulov was an exclusively ingenious artist with his pictures striking with their novelty every time. By revealing the specific character of his talent the organizers of the exhibition managed to get the impression of an amazing atmosphere through the paintings. They could highlight Yakoulov’s art within the limits of the exquisite, by which this exhibition stands out of other personal exhibitions.
