Featuring over 100 works by more than forty artists, Streams of Modernism is the first research exhibition to explore the complex and often overlooked relationships between Soviet Armenian and diasporan art during the mid-20th century. Drawn entirely from the collection of the National Gallery of Armenia, this survey sheds new light on the way artistic exchange flourished between Soviet Armenia and its diaspora between the 1930s-60s, despite the ideological divisions and political barriers of the Cold War.
Streams of Modernism also reveals how these artistic cross-currents forged a fragile yet vast network between Armenia and the diaspora, helping mend the traumatic fragmentations of the post-Genocide Armenian cultural reality. It's a historical factor that challenges long-held assumptions about the 'hermeticism' of Soviet-Armenian art, and provides a more connected, multipolar vision of 20thcentury Armenian modernism.
