Jansem: The master of vivid line

The artistic path of French-Armenian painter Jean Jansem (Hovhannes Semerjian, 1920–2013) is a deeply human and socially engaged narrative that left an indelible mark on both French and Armenian diasporan culture of the second half of the 20th century. In his works, Jansem focused on portraying the most vulnerable and invisible members of society – the poor, sex workers, women, children, and the elderly, as well as the rituals and objects of everyday life.

The exhibition showcases over 120 works by Jean Jansem, bringing together the key themes of the artist’s graphic oeuvre from the 1960s to the 1980s. The works are selected from Jansem’s generous donation to Armenia, highlighting his deep connection to Armenian culture and the homeland.
